In this short essay Keith Nichols gives his ideas on how to free ourselves from fossil fuels and our addiction to gasoline.

How to Solve Our Dependency on Oil Keith Nichols

As Nichols points out, his solution isn't "new". He correctly points out though that it was not the idea itself that caused the solution to fall out of favor, but more a case of the technology not being up to the task when it was tried. And it was tried in many applications and niche markets and is still used where the conditions are right. Nichols is hoping the idea will inspire more thought on the subject, and maybe get us all an answer that sounds better than "$5 per gallon and climbing." I think Nichols achieved his goal - I'm thinking about it anyway. And for reviewers who care about credentials, I'm a professional engineer. (Note however, the appeal to credentials is another example of logical fallacy - logic is logic whether or not you have letters after your name.)

How to Solve Our Dependency on Oil Keith Nichols Reviews

I found this essay ill-considered, poorly researched, and generally useless. For readers that are interested in the topic, there are tens, maybe hundreds of books out there written by credentialed authors with useful and pertinent information. In my opinion, the author knows little if anything about the energy business (and that's not a dirty word), nor is he well-informed about public policy.
A thoughtful essay, on something that some engineers are now working on --- going back to the future with the steam car.

It is indeed unfortunate that the early steam and electric cars were abandoned.

In fact, according to the wiki entry on this, the early steam cars even beat the ones with internal combustion engines in speed records.

There, of course, technical challenges in making steam cars equally convenient ... the big one seems to be that the boiler adds weight to the car and you also need a bigger radiator, but it seems to me that these are challenges that can be solved with modern materials and technologies.

It will probably be a long, long time, before we see steam vehicles in the car dealership lots. But, people are working on it ... in 2009, Charles Burnett III rode a 25-foot-long, three-tonne "kettle" called "Inspiration" in the British Steam Car Challenge, and broke a world record for the steam car, achieving average speed of 139.84mph!
VERY COOL!
